What does it mean to have cisgender privilege?
It means having safe(r) access to health services when you need medical attention.
For trans and non-binary folks, going to the hospital can be an unpleasant experience. For many, it means having to face discrimination by the people who are supposed to help you get better. 🩺
In some cases, people get worse.
!!️TRIGGER WARNING: Suicide!!️
In 2015, Kyler Prescott, a transgender boy, was brought to the hospital by his mother for self harm and suicidal ideation. He had been experiencing transphobic harassment by his peers.
He was put on a 72 hour hold in the children’s psychiatric ward. His mother had repeatedly informed the staff that Kyler was a boy and to use his correct pronouns. But the misgendering and transphobia in the hospital got so bad, it began to make Kyler’s symptoms worse. So, Kyler was discharged home only 24 hours in.
5 weeks later, Kyler died by suicide.
He was only 15 years old.
Folks, we need to do better. Our patients’ lives depend on it. ❤️
