The term “Shenwai Shenfa” (Body outside of Body) comes from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. In one episode, Sun Wukong battles a demon by plucking a single hair from his body, chewing it into pieces, and blowing it into the air. Each fragment transforms into countless little monkeys, multiplying his strength. This work reinterprets that story: the original text is arranged on the wall in the form of small tear-off notepads, resembling tags or sticky notes, from which viewers are free to take a sheet. Once removed, the full text sometimes appears as though corrupted, displaying computer-like garbled code or a mixture of languages, and then at times returning to normal. On the back of each page is printed the artist’s website address: www.xubing.com. In this way, the energy of network technology seems to echo the ancient technique of Shenwai Shenfa, a multiplication of presence beyond the body.
