On July 29th, dedicated public servant and first ever Mexican American U.S. ambassador to Mexico Julian Nava passed away at the age of 95.
Nava was born in 1927 in Los Angeles and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights. He then served in the Navy during World War II and was one of the first Mexican Americans to earn a doctorate from Harvard. He later became a history professor at Cal State Northridge when it opened in 1956. Nava was the first ever Mexican American Los Angeles Unified Board of Education board member, serving on the board when student walkouts against educational inequality were happening across East Los Angeles during the late 1960s. He was known for speaking out in support of bilingual education and undocumented immigrants at a time when it was politically risky to do so.
Nava is revered as a trailblazer and champion for the Latino community. “We celebrate the life of Dr. Julian Nava, whose life blessed us with lessons of love in action, building community, addressing harms of systemic injustices, caring about children and being a triumphant servant leader,” L.A. Unified Board Member Mónica García said Tuesday in a statement.
