This #MoodBoosterMonday we’re continuing to celebrate the fifth anniversary of The Chicago Institute for Fetal Health at Lurie Children’s. In 2017, Kylie and her unborn daughter became the first patients to undergo surgery to repair spina bifida in utero at The Chicago Institute for Fetal Health. At 22 weeks pregnant, Kylie learned that her baby had hydrocephalus, water on the brain, and spina bifida, a condition that occurs when the spinal cord does not form correctly.
Kylie and her husband Luke came to the institute and became hopeful when they met the expert team. “Right away, we felt a connection with the team and knew they truly cared about us,” Kylie said. The Chicago Institute for Fetal Health is one of a few comprehensive destinations for fetal care in the country and specializes in treating people with complex pregnancies.
Two weeks after the successful surgery, Kylie prematurely delivered her daughter, Mila, who spent four months in the neonatal intensive care unit. Kylie and her husband understood that Mila’s development might look different than expected, but, to their surprise, she began walking before she reached two years old.
Five years later, Mila has met many of her key developmental milestones and is playing adaptive sports. Mila’s family is one of over one hundred that have benefitted from minimally fetal surgeries at the Chicago Institute for Fetal Health. Read the full story at the link in our profile. #all4your1
