Overly dramatic game of would you rather, I’ll admit. First, it needs to be said, so I say it often and loud enough for the people in the back: if you feel beautiful when you dye and highlight your hair, I’m happy for you. It’s important to do what makes you feel good. But after 20 years, dying my hair brought me zero joy. As a working mom of two boys, I felt as though what little time I had to myself was spent in the salon, and I didn’t leave the chair feeling beautiful. For two days, you could see outlines the dye left across my forehead and around my ears. Within a week, I could spot those dull, coarse grays and felt ashamed. By week three, I’d spray my roots each morning and wash the brown from under my fingers each night. My pillow case looked disgusting 🤢 At week 4, I was back in the chair to start the cycle all over again. After years of this cycle, I found inspiration here, on Instagram and decided it’d be easy to just stop. So I did... I’m an instant gratification kind of girl, so waiting two years to watch my hair grow was painstaking. The first three months, I felt an immense amount of shame and embarrassment. At six months, I felt like I had to explain myself to grocery cashiers and the mailman — none of which acknowledged or asked, by the way. Somehow, letting them know it was by choice made me feel more powerful, in control of the situation. But that’s when I finally started to love it. Perhaps, that love grew because of YOU. Your encouragement and support... Over 2.5 years later, and wiry and coarse grays are a thing of the past, my hair is soft, albeit unruly 🤭 Hindsight is 20/20, and I love having gone through the process to get here. But I wouldn’t do it again, if given the choice.
