happy trans day of visibility! since non-binary technically falls under the umbrella of transgender (not being cisgender), I am sharing this as a reminder to anyone who’s on their gender journey right now. gender is a full on construct. I’m fully non-binary, regardless of how I dress, speak or act in any situation. I am fully non-binary, regardless of whether or not I correct someone’s misuse of pronouns for me. there are no rules on how to be non-binary. as i was beginning this journey, I felt so anxious and insecure about how to claim this identity, that I’d have to earn it somehow? i’ve had enough of that. being non-binary is not something that I became, but something that I always was. I am non-binary because I think this label makes the most sense for my gender journey. at the end of the day, a label is just a flimsy attempt at capturing the richness and messiness that is the human experience. I find it helpful to be able to have found words to help me understand existence outside the binary, but I don’t feel tethered or bound to labels beyond that. I choose to embrace that our experiences can live outside of preconceived labels and gendered expectations. That’s what I want people to see, when they see trans visibility.
