Today marks a painful memory for the AAPI community. Exactly one year ago, an armed man entered Young’s Asian Massage, Gold Spa, and Aromatherapy Spa in Atlanta, intent on ending the lives there. And he did, engaging in a deadly shooting spree in which those who worked there were simultaneously his “temptations” and targets. He killed 8 people, 6 of them Asian women:
Soon Chung Park, age 74
Hyun Jung Grant, age 51
Suncha Kim, age 69
Yong Yue, age 63
Delaina Ashley Yaun, age 33
Paul Andre Michels, age 54
Xiaojie Tan, age 49
Daoyou Feng, age 44
Though a year has passed, the Asian community is still plagued with fear and unhinged violence, especially toward women and elderly. This past Friday, a 67-year-old Asian woman in New York was punched, stomped, and spit on 125 times while trying to get into her apartment. Things must change. It’s long overdue.
Throughout the day today, Justice for Asian Women events will be held across the country by @asianjusticemovement to remember the victims and #BreakTheSilence. Please swipe to learn about events happening near you and to tune into the national livestream. More information is available at asianjusticemovement.org.
