Rest in Power Dan Graham Dan was a mentor, friend and inspiration. My art would not exist without him, his work, and his ideas. Dan’s approach to critique via architecture and design became mine. We met when I worked at EAI in the 2000s and organized screenings of his video work. He would come in frequently to edit and always stopped to chat with the junior staff and drop elder wisdom, historical gossip, and questionable astrological analysis. And to shit talk his “archenemy” Vito Acconci among others. Always curious and generous, Dan encouraged my work as an artist and curator outside EAI and the work of my peers from the very beginning - when all the art professionals were deeply skeptical of someone employed as a curator making art. Dan and his partner the artist Mieko Meguro were at Nobodies New York and many of the other shows at 179 Canal. Mieko kept a studio in the building and started her project space 3A Gallery next door to Circular File’s temporary “TV Studio.” Whether they know it or not, Dan’s work is one of the origin points for so much of the art that has defined the last decade. In a field that has been largely swallowed up by wannabe bankers and unimaginative bureaucrats, Dan’s perspective on art was always a reality check.
