#WorkOfTheWeek is George Clausen’s 'The Girl at the Gate,' dated 1889. He painted this picture of Mary Baldwin, the Clausen family nanny, in the village of Cookham Dean in Berkshire, where he lived. Clausen was one of the ‘rural naturalists’, a group of late 19th-century artists who painted scenes of country life. They were known for their realistic depictions of rural workers, with many of the group influenced by the French painter Jules Bastien-Lepage. They often developed their style while living and working together in international artists’ communities. Discover the work up-close in Tate Britain's Walk Through British Art: 1890. 💙
