What would your child’s dream obstacle course look like? To us, it looks like supercharged developmental play! Not only can obstacle courses transform any room into an exciting adventure for hours of play, they also can build cognitive, gross motor, language, and social-emotional skills. We partnered with our friends @piccalio to create a course that can accommodate multiple children and encourages them to: 👉 Build cognitive skills by following a sequence of instructions. 👉 Work on gross motor skills, like regulating their body and modulating their speed. 👉 Motor plan how to maneuver around and between obstacles. 👉 Boost their frustration tolerance and coping skills by waiting for their turn. 👉 Expand their vocabulary with new words, such as “on,” “off,” “around,” and “through.” 👉 Improve their working memory by remembering the goal and the order of the steps to get to it. Here are a few tips for creating an obstacle course at home: ❤️ You can set one up in almost any size space—if there’s enough room to walk, there’s enough room for a course. 👀 Make it interesting with a variety of activities, like hoops or chalk circles to jump into, a table or chair to crawl under, and furniture cushions to climb over. 🎉To keep it fun, try incorporating elements that help your child explore a range of gross motor skills, like balancing, hopping on one foot, or walking backward.
