On Sept. 15 (12-2 pm PST), please join us for the virtual panel “Current State of Monuments,” a conversation about the historical exclusions that inform or distort our understanding of public art.
Across the US, it’s increasingly acknowledged that artworks and monuments have the power to inspire or perpetuate harmful histories that exclude the rich and diverse history of communities. Interventions of artwork and monuments by artists and activists have prompted conversations about the evolution and representation of cultural memory, as well as the immediate need for transformational change in the management of public art collections.
“Current State of Monuments” will include public art leaders and historians who will discuss their roles in the current dialogue about monuments, offer historical context to related artworks and monuments, and discuss how their municipalities are responding by shining a light on approaches and programs that support equitable and inclusive futures of public art collections.
