Tomorrow I will play at Subspace x Rote Flora in Hamburg again after a long break of several years. Anyone who knows this place knows how special it is. It's not a club, but a centre for emancipatory politics & culture and managed to retain its squat status and also its non-commercial character for decades. No one is supposed to make money in the Rote Flora. Any profits flow into the maintenance of the building as well as into political campaigns. The party series Subspace has been around for a very long time. Once a month on Thursdays. That's where I first heard techno and tried to understand this music around 2010. At that time, dark minimal techno was on its peak and I still love this sound today because I associate it with a lot of memories and a very specific exciting feeling. I was especially amazed by the community spirit, by the great people I met and became close friends with. Even my beginnings as a DJ are connected to this sound - that started around 2013. I also had my first experiences as an event organiser at the Rote Flora in 2017 - my party series was called Lucid and was just the beginning of a path I never planned to go down, but it felt so right. And I was good at it, always working hard, it felt like something worthwhile. For the first time in my life I was doing something that made so much sense and really enriched me in a meaningful way. In this context, I also long for less social media, because I myself now find it toxic, it causes me and everyone I talk to stress (to say the least). The times when this tool was partly pleasant are over. I miss the time when computers just stayed at home and nobody missed it for a second. There was more privacy, more spontaneity, more thrills.
