I’ve been thinking about my dad a lot today. It’s been a year and a half (or so)without him now. And I am still adjusting. Maybe everyone thinks of their dad as super human at some point. I certainly did. As one of the best neurosurgeons in Delhi, he once saved the life of a man who was attacked by a Bengal Tiger. He told me that the reason he chose neurosurgery was because the brain is so complex, so delicate - If you make an incision a millimeter away - you can paralyze the patient. He did extraordinary things. The man who survived the tiger attack was from a poor village in India so my dad made sure he was treated for free. He did Impossible feats - leaving his comfortable life behind in India to start over again in the US at the age of 38. His patients loved him. His residents voted to give him the best teacher award year after year. And so there was little time for family. I fit in on Sundays for a few hours and every couple of years for a week of vacation. As a kid, I watched him from a distance... my dad the invincible. As a teen - it became a double edged sword as I rebelled against his impeccable legacy. It was only later in his life when work was winding down for him that we grew close. It was only later, as he battled a cruel and rare neurological disease that I understood how strong he was. He was humble and knew he was never going to live long. And knowing this gave him tremendous wisdom and strength. Time took on new meaning as it became fleeting and precious. In those final days and months as he grew weaker and more vulnerable - that’s when he truly became super human. I realized his strength came from deep within not from the titles and accolades he was given. It came from his character and his generosity and not from his accomplishments. It was here that I understood his essence. It was love. In one of his final interviews he said, “just make sure you help people.” Here’s to you dad on Father’s Day! You left big shoes to fill. #fathersday
