“My visual imagination is very influenced by the American television I watched growing up in East Germany in the 1990s, especially The Flinstones. This is a show that was produced in the 1960s but set in the Stone Age: it’s as though the U.S. was claiming that the consumerist middle-class family had been around since prehistoric times. It doesn’t imagine any past beyond the capitalist system... As a child, this was how I learned about the U.S. — and it put certain images and desires and fantasies in my mind as we experienced the shift from socialism to capitalism and the friction between those systems.”
Ahead of the opening of Henrike Naumann: Re-Education, @henrikenaumann spoke with @vcamblin about her first solo U.S show for @pinupmagazine. Read the full interview at the link in our bio.
Henrike Naumann: Re-Education is on view at SculptureCenter, open Thurs-Mon 12-6PM.
