Photo by @andrea_frazzetta | Every year millions of tourists visit sites like the Forum in downtown Rome. The first stones of the Appian Way are likely deep under what is now the chaotic and congested city center.
The Appia is the most famous Roman road still in existence. At 360 miles (580 kilometers), the route connects Rome to Brindisi. It was one of Europe’s first highway systems and inspired the saying “All roads lead to Rome.”
After centuries of abandon, a two-year revitalization is under way, with an aim to reestablish the route and save the immense archaeological heritage spread along its path.
The full story on this Roman-era “superhighway”—written by @ninastrochlic—is in the July issue of @natgeo. Follow me @andrea_frazzetta for more images from this project. #Italy #appianway #Roma
