Today is the World Day Against Human Trafficking, and Free-Them is Exposing The Exploiters.
Human trafficking is the fasting growing crime on the planet today; it's happening in Toronto, Canada, in our backyards, and around the world.
The victims and perpetrators of human trafficking are deeply traumatized and deeply wounded. So this cause strongly connects with the mental health advocacy work I am passionate about.
Moreover, as a Haitian-Canadian, my ancestors were stolen from Africa.
My ancestors were victims of human trafficking via the trans-Atlantic slave trade -- the most comprehensive and costly slave trade in human history.
We are rising up and getting loud!
There are over 40 million people in global slavery right now.
Over 80% of women and children trafficked are for sexual exploitation.
Over 80% of males trafficked are forced into labor.
In Canada, 93% of human trafficking victims are Canadian.
The average age of entry into forced prostitution in Canada is 13.
55% of domestic victims in America met their trafficker and built a relationship by text, website, or apps.
Traffickers can make over $280,000 annually by selling a victim for exploitation.
We need to get loud on this issue.
