There’s a song on our new record called “You and I”. I wrote it to acknowledge the attempted genocide against indigenous people throughout history, but more importantly to acknowledge the resilience and power of indigenous people.
Today is a day where many Americans casually celebrate a person who’s maybe the most prominent symbol of devastation towards native people. Over the last few years the narrative around this day has changed and many of us refer to it as Indigenous Peoples Day. The acknowledgement of today as IPD is significant because for so long, and to this day, the only acknowledgment of indigenous people was when we were exploited, enslaved and executed.
A day that unites indigenous people is powerful.
Speaking from my own experience as a Latino person, I know for a fact that countless people who grew up like me weren’t encouraged to appreciate and value their native roots. So many of us have been indoctrinated with anti-indigenous rhetoric for the purpose of stripping us of the strength we really have.
I wrote this song to uplift us, no matter what corner of the world we come from.
You and I are proof. Our day will come.
