It's a wrap! We just finished our final summer programs, and we conducted a dozen environmental education programs for over 220 youth and teachers throughout the year. Our big highlight was the collaborative summer programs with Reef Relief’s Coral Camp, where children ages 10-14 developed life skills while camping at the park for three days and two nights. Campers learned about the various cultural and natural resources the park protects through hands-on learning. They assisted with sea turtle surveys, Jr Angler sustainable fishing programs, coral and fish ID while snorkeling, and even helped address marine debris by conducting beach cleanups with staff. They also attended presentations from multiple researchers such as sharks, turtles, and Our World Underwater Scholar, and then had opportunities to tour the M/V Fort Jefferson which is the largest, year-round operated vessel in the National Park Service. The park partnered with Reef Relief (@reefrelief ), a local nonprofit organization that helps educate visitors and community members throughout the Florida Keys on how to improve and protect our precious coral reef ecosystem. This camp along with other youth programs is funded in large part through education grants from the Alliance for Florida's National Parks. (@nationalparksfl ) Funding from the Alliance helps strengthen and increase various youth programs as well as the preservation and protection of both sea turtles and nurse sharks.
