The towering trees can grow up to 60 meters (197 feet) tall, casting thin shadows across the coffee-growing landscape.⁠ The wax trees are threatened by mining, cattle ranching, and agricultural activities. A recent study from the National University of Colombia’s Institute of Natural Sciences found that the valley’s wax trees were dying off and projected that, without intervention, they’d be gone by 2090.
