It seems I’ve picked up a few followers in the year since I last introduced myself (THANK YOU, 10K!) so I think it’s time for some fun facts.
📸 I’m quite shy. A recurring motto in my life has always been: “I’ve never cared to see my name in lights, but I really want to help people see theirs.” Being a stepping stone in the journey to others’ successes brings me the most joy.
📸 I was born and raised in Northern Virginia, but most people just call it DC. Now I’m in Astoria, but most people just call it NYC.
📸 I moved to NYC in 2014 to pursue fashion, so you’ll find many allusions to that former life in my images.
📸 I left fashion when I missed my friends from back home, who were all theatre folk. If your peers don’t make you happy, find new peers.
📸 I attribute my obsession with headshots from when I was a child in Carnegie Deli (RIP), enamored by the thousands of celebrity portraits crowding the walls, while gorging myself on gargantuan open-faced Reuben sandwiches and pickled tomatoes.
📸 My love for dance came when @victoriaheerphotography introduced me to @ballerinaproject_ on Tumblr (you know, that thing before instagram). Dane Shitagi’s romantic images of dancers juxtaposed onto the streets of NY further deepened my love affair with this city.
📸 My dream home would be a secret spacious, skylit studio positioned directly above the @zabars’ bakery section, perpetually stocked with fresh cheese strudels and smoked salmon.
📸 In high school, I thought I was going to be a professional magician until photography took up every last brain cell and dollar.
📸 I’m a huge history nerd. I love picturing what came before me (thank you for scratching that itch, @keithyorkcity and @themegandaily). I was a newspaper photojournalist for many years, and still today I gush over historical images, attempting to transport myself back to those moments, in hopes that someone someday will lose themselves in mine. Perhaps this helped give birth to my Timeless Sessions.
📸 I often struggle identifying with the word “artist” when so much of what I do is customer service. Then some days a shoot hits just right and I remember that art takes on many forms.
