Dear Mr Salman Rushdie, a heinous and deeply unjust act of terror has been committed against you. In all the years since the Fatwa, you have been hounded and intimidated but never silenced. Your writings have always remained critical, humanistic and beautiful. You have visited Amsterdam several times, especially cultural center De Balie, where in 1993 The Rushdie Defence Committee was established. You have laid the foundation for 'cities of refuge' in the 90’s, later transformed into ICORN (International Cities of Refuge Network). Inspired by you, Amsterdam has been home to international, dissident artists ever since. Amsterdam feels deeply connected to you and stands with you. We long for your courageous and literary voice: now and in the future. We hope you recover and continue to inspire young generations of freethinkers. (Foto ANP)
