I got tired of my former agent sending me in for drug dealers and Jesus no matter how many times I tried to change course. I got tired of using other creative work to fill the space left by not seeing roles I wanted to play. I don’t just design and style things, I act, and I got tired of compromising. So I got some collaborators together, some old and some new, and have been working on a couple of numbers from Cabaret with them, to build a production, bit by bit. I’ve enjoyed seeing what happens when the choreography is new, when it’s me as Sally Bowles in a world that I’ve researched and built over years and years. Maybe the West End production will transfer and the rights will be frozen, and I’ll have to wait and watch other people do the part, but at least I’ll know I’m not sitting around doing nothing about it. And I know that nobody can take Sally from me, because nobody knows her the way I do.
