What does a *50% asthma rate* in a school in the Inland Empire have to do with next-day package delivery? This unacceptable statistic speaks directly to how our shopping habits come at the expense of residents who live and work near the warehouses, located in areas like the IE, that fulfill the orders to meet this ever-growing demand. During an Inland Empire ‘Toxic Tour’ with @sierraclubangeles, @pc4ej, and @thegarciacenterforthearts last month as a part of my work with @southcoastaqmd, I learned about the rapid development of warehouses and railyards in the area, a region predominantly made up of residents of color. Many are employees of these sites, often working in subpar labor conditions —1 in 5 is an Amazon employee. The impact on surrounding air quality from increased truck and locomotive emissions from constant stops at these sites is outsized. It manifests in tangible effects, from skyrocketing asthma rates to elevated cancer risk. Residents and advocacy groups are calling out in desperation, and we need to center those voices in our policy- and decision-making. As the AQMD Board develops the next draft of its plan to protect air quality and public health, the immediate needs of those affected by this new reality will help inform what I advocate for as a Board member.
