✨6 MOIS’s FINDINGS
To start the month, my December guest Federica Angelucci, co- director of @stevenson_za Gallery in Cape Town, has chosen the moving work of South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa (@lindokuhle.sobekwa) :
"At the age of 7, Lindokuhle argued with his sister about a sum of money his father had given him to buy food for home. While his sister Ziyanda ran after him to take the money, he was hit by a car. The boy spent three months in the hospital and Ziyanda disappeared. He did not see her again for a decade. When she came home she was ill and died a few months later. In 2017 Lindokuhle found a family photo in his mother's Bible with his sister's face cut out: the only portrait the Sobekwa's had of her was given away for her funeral. The South-African photographer sets up for a journey in search for his missing sister. In order to understand the life she lived during her absence, he went to meet the people she hanged out with, visited the places she had known. A girl sitting on a bed with her back turned, a dress hanging from a ceiling, an empty courtyard, a silhouette in the middle of a street: we wonder if Ziyanda has been here, if these are her clothes, her bed... But there are no answers. Like the author, we find ourselves looking for her in the folds of things. And it is there, perhaps, that we find her. "I carry her picture with me" is an intimate and universal quest for the other, who is close to us and yet always far away."
