This exhibition takes its title from the laconic inscription on the black wooden frame of Neil Jenney’s 1969 painting Girl and Doll. With rough brushstrokes, the work depicts a girl crying next to a broken doll. Figuration and the language of the title vie with each other in the abstract, monochrome treatment of the painting. The girl and the doll are both identified by the title and by the painting, making the depicted cry even more dramatic. The doll acts as a surrogate, whilst the notion of the girl herself is colonized as a product by consumer society, beyond fixed gender. In Jenney’s painting, the doll, the simulacrum, has collapsed.
