Getting pregnant with medicated IUI - it might take time but it can happen! Here’s what you need to know: We use medications like #clomid or #letrozole to either induce regular #ovulation in people with irregular cycles (ie. #pcos ) and in combination with IUI in cases where all testing is mostly normal and we want to improve odds of success by improving things on both the egg and sperm side. The meds may give the body the opportunity to release more than 1 egg, improving the odds that at least one of the eggs will be normal and healthy and capable of resulting in a pregnancy. We combine that with intrauterine insemination (IUI) to address mild sperm issues or to boost the odds of sperm successful fertilizing egg(s) by delivering a high concentration of motile, viable sperm at the top of the uterus. Whether the eggs fertilize successfully, grow into an embryo that is genetically normal and capable of implanting is largely out of our control with medicated IUI cycles (just like trying without treatment) which is why success rates per cycle are overall not very high. But the combination of boosting odds on the egg and sperm side of things can make all the difference in certain patients. Most of my patients who get pregnant with medicated IUI require multiple rounds to get pregnant. The tricky thing is knowing when to “fold em’” and move onto more efficient and effective treatment - IVF. In general, most of us will advise doing no more than 6 medicated IUIs in unexplained infertility as the odds of success begin to drop off beyond that point. If treating for irregular cycles it might be logical to continue for longer than 6 months as maybe you only got into the game of #ttc once meds were started to prompt ovulation (and we know it could take up to a year to conceive). Age is a major factor. Patients >35 with #unexplainedinfertility may move onto IVF sooner (~ 3-4 failed medicated IUIs)- especially if they want to have >1 child- since with #ivf you can freeze embryos for the future. **Potential risks: ~3-8% risk of twin/multiple pregnancy, and the natural risk of miscarriage. If you’re doing medicated #iui - persistence is key! 💜🍀
