Andrea Fraser: This meeting is being recorded, is a day-long screening followed by a discussion led by the artist and London based curator Jamie Stevens. In recent years, Andrea Fraser's pioneering research into institutional systems has shifted towards a psychoanalytically informed analysis. In particular, Group Relations methodologies have come to the forefront of her pedagogical and artistic work. This meeting is being recorded (2021), a ninety- nine-minute video exploring issues of race, gender, and age within an intergenerational group of self-identified white women, is the artist’s most explorative application of Group Relations to date. Group Relations is a method for experiential learning and research about unconscious dynamics in groups and organizations. Combining psychoanalysis and systems theory, Group Relations has been applied in a range of different fields, from organizational development to education and activism. This meeting is being recorded developed out of work applying Group Relations to the study of racism. In September and October 2020, Fraser convened a group of seven white- and female-identifying members of the US Group Relations community to participate in six ninety-nine- minute meetings, held on Zoom. The group attempted to take up the task of studying their internal racism and roles in white supremacy as white women through a self-reflexive study of the unconscious forces and fantasies at work in their group. The meetings were subsequently transcribed by the artist and edited into a 10,500-word script, which is reprised in This meeting is being recorded as a virtuosic, ninety-nine minute, single-take video in which Fraser performs all seven group members.
