I have a confession to make. When people ask me, “Has any animal ever made you nervous?” I always play it down because I never want to vilify wild creatures, BUT there is one encounter that really challenged my cool. Leopard seals are one of the top predators in Antarctica. They can reach over 11 ft in length and are known for being incredibly bold and curious– especially around divers. However, I learned early in my career that the most transformative moments are born outside the lines of comfort. So when it came time to slip over the edge of the boat, I pulled my mask on and followed my partner @PaulNicklen without hesitation. I am so glad I did. Meeting this beautiful seal face-to-face in her kingdom of ice was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. She taught me the strength in vulnerability; a lesson in courage that embodies the wild spirit of Antarctica and the path to protecting its fragile heart.
