Back to Spiritual Guards, Jan Fabre's large scale exhibition in Florence (Forte di Belvedere, Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio), in 2016.
The motto "Festina lente" (make haste slowly), Latin translation from the original Greek attributed to Emperor Augustus, was associated by Cosimo I de' Medici with the image of a tortoise with a sail, emblem of his fleet, still visible today in the frescoes of Palazzo Vecchio.
Jan Fabre portrays himself astride an enormous tortoise and is an existential key expresses the Renaissance dream of Thomas More, that of an island inhabitated by an ideal society, where it is the culture that dominates and regulates the lives of men.
