Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month - Our mum died of pancreatic cancer over 18 years ago and it was particularly cruel and fast, from diagnosis in August to her passing just before Christmas that same year. However, it never owned her and the strength and positivity she displayed, to keep things as normal for us five kids during this period remains with us all to this day. From organising and being ever present for my sisters birthday in the November, even though her body was working against her with wheelchair and assistance necessary, to walking for over an hour to see my bro play in a hockey match. She knew these moments would be important to us in the near future, inspirational! She did everything and more in those remaining months to create some wonderful lasting memories, which is what we focus on, and she will be forever our hero. It didn’t end the way we all wanted but WE dictated how it would go down and spent as much quality time together as we could. For 18 years, 5 kids have been without their mum. Such a long time and yet feels like only yesterday. I truly hope that fewer and fewer people are impacted in such a way by this cancer and indeed all cancers. Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival of all common cancers, with five-year survival less than 7%. Unbelievable. It is disease that gets too little attention and too little funding.
