/This is Pepper. He’s definitely one of my favorite humans to grow food with. I asked him once how he came to Skid Row and he told me that he left home when he was a kid because his dad asked him to lead the local Kl*n meeting in his stead, and that went against his moral code. I can’t begin to describe how many things Pepper and I have in common, if you look in our eyes you’ll begin to see the similarities, the humanity, the same-ness. One time he looked at me and said: does it ever scare you how much you and I are alike? I don’t think it does. But I stew upon the question like bone in boiling broth. I think fear only begins when you see a sense of otherness, when you don’t conclude that indeed you are two leaves of the same gnarling willow branch. Vulnerable to the wind, stretching toward the sun, soaking in the same rain, sprouting from the same soil.
