@thearchitecturalreview ‘Kitchen debate: where labour and leisure collide’ @marianna_jano “The kitchen is a heated site, where capital and commerce collide with blunt and brutally gendered relations. Linder confronts this tension with Untitled from 1976, a part of her collage practice that combines pornography with consumer catalogues to highlight the ‘cultural monstrosities’ she has witnessed." The essay is such a tour de force: “The contemporary open-plan kitchen is much closer to the historical working-class, multifunctional ‘living kitchen’, with fluid and connected cooking, dining and living areas, a departure from the modernist single-function room. The democratic domestic landscape promises a performance of cooking and entertaining as leisurely and collective, but the ambiguous veneer of wellness obscures the gendered realities of reproductive labour within the heteronormative family. In such a frictionless realm of islands and soft-close drawers, the hard rhetoric of domestic work as labour can help raise the ever important question: for whom is the home leisurely?” Bravo!
