We have talked about her amazing work before, but definitely wanted to share that Phung Huynh: Sobrevivir opens at the Vincent Price Art Museum (vpam_arts) on Sept. 17. It highlights Phung’s LAC+USC Medical Center Coerced Sterilization Recognition Project and features interviews with @hildasolis and our staff. (She’s seen with “Sobrevivir” in one of these photos.)
Phung (@phungxion) is a Los Angeles-based artist and educator whose work explores cultural perception and representation. During her residency with the Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA), Phung worked as a Creative Strategist and focused on developing artist-led strategies to strengthen the relationship between LA County and its immigrant communities. Phung also worked to further integrate arts-based community engagement practices into the work of OIA.
Designing art activities for the public at OIA outreach events, mentoring OIA staff on best practices for leading art activities, and coordinating staff outings to art exhibits are just some of the amazing ways that Phung applied her creativity and cultural awareness during her residency. As an artists who also identifies as an immigrant and refugee, Phung’s art explores the complexities of the Southeast Asian Refugee community and their experiences.
