Every day for the last sixty days I’ve set a timer on my phone for 30 minutes and walked in some random direction. When the timer dings, I turn around.
Sometimes I take calls. Sometimes I listen to a playlist that Spotify has very graciously named “2000s mix,” instead of what it really is, which is songs I used to burn onto blank CDs. Sometimes I listen to a podcast in which a man reads the news in Spanish, very slowly, as if to a child. Once, I put on a podcast where three men in Los Angeles talked about movies. They talked and talked. By the end of my walk it was only half-done. I will not make that mistake again.
Thankfully, walking briskly is not very compatible with scrolling. So I learned to stop scrolling too. Last week I deleted twitter from my phone, and then, feeling nothing but lightness and glee in its absence, deleted all of my tweets. It felt great. I recommend it. Also recommend walking.
