In my forthcoming book, The Closet (out Feb next year), I write about the way in which the clothes I’ve worn have shaped my life. Here I am in a black gown, with black opera gloves, serving tea and a side of worry. I must be around five or six. I remember knowing it wasn’t right to wear dresses as a boy, but I wasn’t sure quite why.
