Finished my 2-sided mural in Asbury Park on City Hall! Thank you so much to @asburyartscouncil @cityofasburyparknj for the open call & selecting my design for this project!!! The mural depicts the history, both real and mythical, of Asbury Park. The left North facing wall tells the story of Asbury’s origins, with the year Asbury Park was incorporated, as well as the original Lenape Native American trails that made up that portion of New Jersey. It also pays homage to Asbury’s nautical, seaside history, with an image of a mermaid surrounded by tentacles and a gigantic seahorse, which also mirrors the city logo of Asbury Park, with two seahorses. Wrapping around the bottom of the mural, you see a tribute to the S.S. Morro Castile ocean liner, which was Asbury’s largest maritime disaster, and has become a legendary tail on the boardwalk. On the right side west facing wall, I wanted to pay tribute to asbury’s musical history. Many people are familiar with it’s rock history, hence the electric guitar with the logos of some of Asbury’s famous rock venues- The Stone Pony, Wonder Bar / Palace Arcade (and the Tilly face!), and the original Asbury Lane’s logo (shout out to @_juicyjenn 🙏). While researching Asbury‘s musical history, I learned that it had a very rich jazz and ragtime history. The west side, which this side of the wall faced, was filled with jazz clubs. Many of the rock clubs wouldn’t exist without the earlier jazz clubs bringing musicians to Asbury Park. The figure on the wall is not Billie Holiday, it’s represents jazz singers in general of that era, but there is a honeysuckle and a rose in her hair, after the famous jazz song “Honeysuckle Rose “which was written on the west side. I also included the façade of the Paramount Theater. I did not do this on purpose, however, the waves on the bottom of the mural are exact replicas of waves found on one of the historic buildings on the boardwalk!
