Bikin & bumpin down the dusty streets of Burning Man (R.I.P. to my who-ha) was like cruising an endless hall of art fair booths in Miami — only the art was created w/out a rule book, or a care if it would sell or not. Cruising bars was like The Cantina scene in Star Wars, & riding around the playa at 🌙 felt like 80s pac man — when the screen goes dark & the characters go neon. My fav part was the different levels of execution. There was art that prob took 3 yrs to create, next to a baby beach ⛺️ w/ 500 pairs of 🕶’s shoved in the dust, titled: “The Sunglasses Hut.” There was art giving country roadhouse/lemonade stand, next to an art 🚙 that looked like the Guggenheim in Bilbao. I thought this trip was going to be about me bursting into some epic full expression of myself, but instead it was a much needed field study. I forgot how long it’d been since I’d been immersed in art & creation like that. Seeing so many masterful creations being brought to life was pretty soul shaking. On many occasions, I found myself grieving the time it’d taken me to be surrounded by ppl vibing at that level of creativity. I also can’t recall a time in my life where I felt that immersed in community. I never went to summer 🏕 growing up, but I imagine waking up every day, eating around the same 🔥 & doing chores together — felt a lot like my 🏠 at the 🍍motel. I loved the camp shifts. At our casual 3k person party, I rocked the bartender role in a red wig & bondage — serving only Dirty Shirley Temple’s. Those are the times I bonded w/ my fellow 🍍’s most. A special moment was meeting w/ friends & strangers for a group chime 🛀 I tried to coordinate. When we arrived at the Temple, The Black Rock Philharmonic was playing — so we opted to listen instead, as we read beautiful 📝’s of ❤️ & loss on the wooden walls. I didn’t take one pic, so here’s some I gathered. In reflecting on what I thought I’d get out of BM, & what I actually did, a quote my friend @toucheghushe shared landed for me, “Seek mystery, not answers.” I may be more in the in-between & unknown than ever, but the reminder of our limitless potential opened something in me that I’m really excited to meet.
