Many underwater photographers tend to focus on the large, recognizable sharks: the mighty great white or incomparable hammerhead. I too have a great love for those famous species prominently featured in shark week. However, I also have a special fondness for the less flashy sharks; the gentle nurse shark for instance. This bottom-dwelling shark will sit in dark places, patiently awaiting its next meal to wander by so it can ambush its prey from the darkness. They may not have the impressive jaws of a great white, but I can tell you from experience that you definitely do not want to put your hand near their mouth as they do have harsh sandpaper-like teeth. Despite not being as charismatic as its larger cousins, the nurse shark deserves our respect as it plays a vital role within its ecosystem, especially within coastal habitats such as seagrass beds.
