Closing this Sunday, September 18, "The Clamor of Ornament" explores ornament in architecture, art, and design through the lens of drawing. The exhibition brings together more than 200 objects from across the globe and features a broad range of drawings, prints, books, textiles, and photographs dating from the fifteenth century to the present.
Included in the works on view are two wallpapers by the New York-based @adelphipaperhangings who specialize in wallpapers that are meticulously reproduced from original documents and hand-printed by skilled artisans using the same methods and materials employed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
On view in our main gallery is Reveillon Arabesque 810, designed in 1789 and printed for this exhibition in 2022. The reproduction of this pattern was originally commissioned by the Homewood Museum at Johns Hopkins University from an original document in their collection. It is double repeating arabesque--meaning it has two vertical rows of pattern per width of paper--created with an unusually large number of colors: 14 hues printed with 24 blocks. On view in our rear gallery is Westwood Gothic, designed c.1840s. The pointed arch was the defining motif of the mid-nineteenth century Gothic Revival, and this design creates the illusion of three dimensionality through the suggestion of shadow.
Don't miss out on seeing these unique wallpapers, presented alongside more than 200 other objects on view in "The Clamor of Ornament". The exhibition closes this Sunday, September 18, and we'll be hosting special extended hours from 6-8pm on September 16 and 17 in celebration of the exhibition's final days.
