AD During the summer holidays, we know that screen time can increase. A recent survey from GMAC (Global Myopia Awareness Coalition) showed that a third of children are spending upwards of 5 hours on screens during the holidays and 4 in 10 parents aren’t aware that prolonged periods of screen time can be a leading cause of eye problems, such as myopia. Myopia (or short sightedness) is when far away objects appear blurry and it’s estimated that almost 50% of the world’s population will be myopic by 2050.
This isn’t about making anyone feel guilty. I’m a parent and we use screens at home BUT my husband and I are also myopic ourselves, so it’s important for us to be aware of how we can try to counteract the effects of the modern digital world and support our little one’s long-term eye health.
76 extra minutes outdoors each day can help to decrease the risk of developing myopia by 50%. So, join me as I challenge you guys and our family to a screen-free staycation this bank holiday weekend. I’ve shared a few ideas of what we will be getting up to and the GMAC have also put together a Screen Staycation Guide with more activity swap ideas and further information about myopia and eye health. Check it out on their website myopiaawareness.org/uk
Let me know if you’re taking part and leave your screen-free ideas in the comments. I think we will need all the help we can get!
