Alex Israel @alexisrael upcoming solo show at Hospitalet @hospitalet_stockholm is featured in Nojësguiden @nojesguiden! “The mega-celebrity from Los Angeles visits Carl Kostyál's remodeled mental hospital. Eyewear designer, talk show host and not least the multimedia artist Alex Israel will visit Sweden for a few weeks in September and October. His works are already in collections such as Moderna Museet, MoMa, Guggenheim and Astrup Fernley. Alex Israel's work largely revolves around how we use social media and how concepts such as talent and self promotion have almost become interchangeable. He himself sees himself more as a self-aware product of the Los Angeles entertainment industry and reflects on what happens when it shifts from old Hollywood culture to influencer life. Or as he himself puts it. - A wave of selfies, personal branding and visibility appeared on the horizon, and I decided to ride it. I embraced the logo as a symbol of my work, embraced myself as a brand, and eventually brought self-portraits to the world as an art object. But also as a sticker, a sign, a mural, a postcard, a pin, a key ring and a luggage tag. Alex Israel was born in 1982 in Los Angeles and began his series of self-portraits back in 2011. The first portrait also served as the logo for his talk show As it Lays, which has been visited by celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Tom Hanks and Melanie Griffith. In addition to self-portraits, his work consists of colorful airbrushed paintings of abstract gradients as well as multimedia installations constructed from movie house props. The place for the exhibition is the former mental hospital at Danviken, which opened last year in a new guise and with a new function as an art gallery. Responsible for the venture is Carl Kostyál in collaboration with Gullringsbo, which owns the property itself. The exhibition at the Hospital runs between 23 September and 9 October. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thursday to Friday 12-18 and Saturday to Sunday between 12-16.”
