Diving in the dark is a whole other level of diving. Would you? Repost from our cofounder @oceanramsey . Descending into darkness. I love night dives, I’ve done so many, and yet it’s been a little while. I feel like part of a hunting pack as I glide over the reef carried with the current as hundreds of sharks fly past and swarm below me searching the coral reef for a their prey items. While sharks can be competitive, there is also often a level of cooperation, there are angles they can approach a prey item at that help increase their chances of successful predation. There is strength in numbers, they can alert each other to potential prey and also potential predators like larger sharks or Orca. When local shark populations decline the chances of those smaller populations surviving may decline as well. Fewer sharks means less sensory systems picking up on prey items that the whole school to be normally be alerted too and fewer potential mates means less genetic diversity. It’s crucial to work with local communities around the world to help protect different populations because ultimately the local fisheries and health of local coral reefs depends on their presence. Sharks are like the doctors of the ocean, by picking off the weak, wounded, injured, and sick they help keep fish stocks healthier and their presence alone helps to limit the predation by medical-predators of important herbivorous fish that clean coral reefs of exceeding algae that would otherwise suffocate it.
