What’s it like running a historic alpine refuge in the mountains near Chamonix, France while mothering two young children? Climbers often become impromptu babysitters when it’s time to make dinner.
Eight years ago, a young woman from Chamonix decided to look after the historic Refuge de la Charpoua alone. In the 2019 season, she brought her first child with her on the climb up to the hut. And she’s added a second baby to the hut-keeping life since then.
The over 100-year-old, one-room refuge has remained largely unchanged besides the addition of a few net barriers to prevent accidents. But it’s probably the first time in its history that it’s also hosted two young kids.
