———————————————————-
This is @axelkacoutie teaching his son Ezad to swim.
Today, Axel, a sound artist, launches his new podcast ‘Interludes’ - a collaboration between him and Lou Mensah @shade_podcast with support from @hauserwirth and @frieze Membership - with an episode where he responds sonically to my practice and in particular my installation The Black Horizon [Do We Muse on the Sky or Remember the Sea].
Axel reached out proposing this a while back so came and hung out with me in my studio. What ensued was a warm, rich and energising conversation about water, freedom, marks on a page, a legacy of traces, the space between...during which I recall Axel telling me wildly uncanny things about myself astrologically and i think i first asked him if he’d like to take part in this swimming project...which would eventually become ‘dwelling’.
As Camille Billops said to bell hooks, “Put all your friends in it [your work], everybody you loved, so one day they will find you and know that you were all here together.”
Axel became a friend that day, in that conversation, fragments of which he’s placed within a tone poem (beautifully accented by @mr.jdallen on tenor sax) that he’s titled ‘Drexciya’, and you can listen to it now via the link in his bio.
