From Shang to Kang, how bout a Wang! A few months ago I had the honor of bringing @bopomofocafe onto @destindaniel’s set for the upcoming Disney+ show #AmericanBornChinese (written by @geneluenyang @internetkelvin)! Then last month Bopo catered another Asian American show #AZNBBGRL directed by Dinh Thai. And last week, Bopo brought me onto a secret project (also Asian American centered/led) directed by old friend (and WF alumni hugger) Viet Nguyen. All these directors were so kind & hospitable (maybe cause I brought them boba) but they're also super inspiring to me, each with their own unique journey to the director's chair. Not gonna lie, it's a strange feeling being on these big Hollywood sets of various AsianAm led projects FINALLY breaking thru, not as a writer or director.. but as a caterer! Not exactly the position I envisioned! 😅 I never planned that my cafe would be my way to get onto the studio backlot. But that's the path that happened, and that I'm currently on, and extremely grateful for. A big lesson I learned this year as a new dad is that a career is a long game, and accepting that my career is in a certain season. Seasons change. So don't freak out at the extreme heat or cold or changing weather. This is the season where I get to build a restaurant business and build a baby 🥹. Sure that means that some other stuff moves a little slower, but I need to be confident in myself that that season will come. And when it does, I'll be the director bringing bopomofo onto my own set. Huge thanks to @chineseguy88 for being bopo's best super-producer customer, @netflixgolden for giving me & bopo its first show, and all the writers/producers/directors/actors/friends who stay supporting and pushing me creatively during this season.
