Happy #NationalComingOutDay! We were fortunate to get to meet Andrew on our recent visit to Eldoret, Kenya. Andrew told us that growing up, they didn’t feel comfortable sharing who they were with family and friends and would often “pray not to be gay.” Andrew came out at the age of 19 shortly after enrolling at university, where they made friends who empowered them to embrace their sexuality. “Most of my friends were gay and comfortable with themselves and expressing themselves with this vibrant energy. Because of them I finally felt ready to say, ‘I am out - I am one of you.’ They gave me a space where I could take my time.” Andrew is now 25 years old - confident with who they are and feels empowered to express their true self. Andrew now works in the community to increase awareness of HIV prevention and sexual and mental health services. Whoever you are and wherever you are in your coming out journey, know that you are loved and deserve to live your truth 🧡
