Hi, it's @ashayebrown again! When writing Dream Country I took inspiration from three cultures of the African diaspora: Kenya, Jamaica and Brazil. I had a great time doing all the research and discovering the traces of a common ancestry throughout these cultures; from food, to dance, to stories, it was amazing to me how much these cultures still share. It soon became clear to me that we are all, in one way or another, a part of one big extended family. Taking inspiration from these three various cultures through their oral storytelling, folktales and myths for Dream Country felt natural, almost like a family reunion. And these theme of separation, displacement and reunion fit in perfectly with the story that I wanted to tell for my three main characters, siblings who are going through a very similar journey of their own. #sharethemicpublishing
