Jean-Jacques Sempé recently passed. Le Petit Nicolas, a book he famously illustrated, was one of the ways I learned French. My tutor had recommended the book to me as a way to read, speak and learn some basics in a fun way, just as a child would. Sempé’s illustrations of Nicolas and his friends still make me laugh. While reading through several celebrations of this legendary illustrator's creations and life, I came across this illustration which reminded me so much of the view from my apartment in Paris. The world needs more Sempé’s, who reflect the world as they see it back to us with child-like wonderment and elegant simplicity.
