I receive a lot of questions about how to light without having money/crew/time. All productions have to move fast and using lights efficiently is the goal no matter the budget. Here’s an example of using cheap lights (3 - 1k Medium Parcans) on an Amazon commercial I shot this week. Parcans have the benefit of being 3200 and make a convincing sun. They aren’t very broad and require few flags. When seen in a reflection or in camera out of focus, they don’t look like a film light fixture because there aren’t barn doors or much of a chassis. The stands cost more to rent than the light fixtures. Single nets are placed in front of the camera to reduce the intensity of the sky. Here are three photos of the setup (the person in the window is a stand-in), I’ll post the final image once we finish the color next week. We were shooting within 35 minutes after call. Using HMIs would be 1 1/2 hours of lighting. Downsides of using HMIs instead of the parcans : -Cost -Weight, would need more expensive stands -Color, gel would cost money and then would burn thru -Power, Money, time, Crew to cable Parcans are a great way to light fast and efficiently. #daviddevlin #cinematography #filmlighting #worksmart #lovewhatyoudo #parcan #efficientlighting
