The Prince of Wales’s official spokesman has said that “racism has no place in our society” after William’s godmother resigned from the royal household for asking a charity’s black chief executive where she “really came from”.
The domestic abuse campaigner, Ngozi Fulani, 61, was attending a reception hosted by the Queen on Tuesday at Buckingham Palace to mark the United Nations’ 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
Fulani said Lady Susan Hussey, 83, brushed her hair aside to read her name badge and began questioning her about “which part of Africa” she came from.
When Fulani told her she was from Hackney in north London, she says Hussey — who was lady-in-waiting to the late Queen and made lady of the household by the King — replied: “No, but where do you really come from? Where do your people come from? When did you first come here?”
